MEDIA RELEASE

9 January 2020

Senator Jim Molan to visit Cairns 23 January 2020

Enterprise North and Sea Swift are pleased to advise that Senator Jim Molan has accepted an invitation to visit Cairns and will use the visit to familiarise himself with defence and marine and port facilities in Cairns and to address a public luncheon at the Pullman Casino Hotel where the discussion will be around the strategic importance of Northern Australia in the new decade and the role that Cairns is likely to play in our engagement with Melanesia and other emerging strategic influences within the region.

Senator Molan has enjoyed a long and extensive military career. A graduate of the Royal Military College, Duntroon in Canberra, he served successfully through the entire army operational command structure culminating with his final active command appointment  as Chief of Operations for the multi nation Iraq allied forces deployment. This period coincided with a period of continuous and intense combat operations. For distinguished command and leadership in this period, he was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross and the American Legion of Merit. He has also served as Australia’s Military Attaché to Indonesia during the period of our engagement in Timor during their transition to independence.

Senator Molan and Kevin Byrne served together in Papua New Guinea very early in their military careers and both share a familiarity with and an understanding of the regional challenges ahead in the next decade.

“This is a very important decade for our struggling regions across the north and it is important that we all understand the context of the international challenges that lie ahead and the policies that governments will seek to implement to meet these challenges”

“I am delighted that Senator Molan has found time early in the new year to visit and share his thoughts on our strategic regional issues. He has been wanting to come for some time however was delayed due to Senate appointment processes that concluded late last year. Cairns is likely to play a key role in any future regional engagement activities and it will be these issues that we have the opportunity to discuss informally with him whilst he is here” Kevin Byrne said.
